The shipment of perishables by air has always had challenges, ranging from simply determining supply versus demand to the race involved in getting the goods from the shipper to the consumer with minimum loss and maximum profit.
Today those challenges are expanding exponentially, caused by forces primarily out of the hands of the cool chain managers...ranging from the global economic meltdown and rapidly rising shipping costs, to legislated security requirements and changes in societal eating habits. There is even growing pressure in some European markets to have goods labeled with the carbon footprint they produce. "That includes any transportation that is used to get them to market, so there is a backlash to having strawberries on your cereal 12 months a year," said Robert Dahl, project director, Air Cargo Management Group.
