National Retail Systems, Inc. has opened a 15-acre distribution center in Compton, Calif., close to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The expansion gives NRS more than 1.5m square feet of distribution-facility space in the area, all within 10 miles of the two ports. NRS has expanded its business to offer integrated pier drayage, transload and D.C.-bypass services on the West Coast, linked with its national retail distribution network. It has also been adding clients outside of the retail industry, including electronics and pharmaceuticals manufacturers. To complement its facility expansion, NRS recently deployed 115 pier trucks that comply with Clean Truck Program requirements at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The new pier fleet can handle 70,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of imports per year. NRS said it plans to increase that fleet to handle 300,000 TEU of imports annually. Services offered by NRS include crossdocking, ticketing, pick and pack, labeling, inventory replenishment and warehouse management.
