MeadWestvaco, provider of packaging solutions and products to many of the world's best-known companies, wanted to reduce transportation costs across its network of 51 North American manufacturing and distribution facilities, and decided to run a sourcing event for 1,000 truckload and 300 intermodal lanes. To better manage transportation costs, MeadWestvaco also wanted to rationalize the total number of carriers in its network and improve working capital.

The challenge faced by MeadWestvaco was that each facility had its own unique needs for carrier service and incumbency preferences.
