Zim American Integrated Shipping Services Company plans May 14 to reroute its Asia-Med-Pacific (AMP) pendulum service from Seattle to the Port of Portland, Ore. ZIM's AMP service utilizes 13 Panamax container ships ranging from 3,800 to 4,200 twenty-foot equivalent units. Portland will be the service's only U.S. West Coast port of call. Zim provides a mini-landbridge service via Vancouver to the Midwest and Eastern Canada. In addition, distribution centers in Minneapolis, Minn., and Joliet, Ill., can now be served via Portland.
"The decision to call Portland was a direct response to the transportation requirements of Zim's customers," says Zim senior vice president of sales and marketing Thomas Keen. "Portland's prime location, accessibility and close proximity to major rail and highway connections match Zim's criterion for a port that can provide its customers with a superior, value-added, world class container service."
