For the week ending June 26, spot market equipment postings increased by 3.0 percent, while load volume declined by 2.8 percent. Truck capacity still appears to be constrained in the market as a whole. Flatbed capacity is beginning to ease, and spot market rates for flatbeds are leveling off. Flatbed rates averaged $1.61 per mile nationwide, with an added fuel surcharge of about $0.40. Reefer capacity is constrained for the peak summer season. Not surprisingly, reefer rates continue their upward trend, and spot market rates are on track to exceed contract rates in the refrigerated segment in June. Dry van rates are also trending upwards on the spot market, with spot market rates narrowing the gap to 6 percent below contract rates. The gap was 11 percent in May.
