Volkswagen of South Africa has awarded CAT-WWL Logistics a three-year contract to manage the distribution of 150,000 VW passenger and commercial vehicles a year in South Africa. It is reportedly one of the biggest factory-to-dealer logistics contracts to be granted in South Africa.
CAT-WWL Logistics is a joint venture between Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics and the French-based Compagnie d'Affrètement et de Transport (CAT) Group.
CAT-WWL will manage the distribution of vehicles from VW of SA's manufacturing plant in Uitenhage, near Port Elizabeth, by road, rail and sea to their final market destinations. In addition, CAT-WWL will run VW of SA's vehicle storage depot at the plant as well as providing its own facility for VW of SA's use in Kaalfontein, near Johannesburg.
"We have a wealth of experience working with car manufacturers in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania, and we will be bringing these skills to bear on what is one of the world's fastest-growing automotive markets," says Rune Loew, managing director, CAT-WWL Logistics.
