DHL is spending $22.5m to expand its hub facility at the Cincinnati/North Kentucky airport. Beginning in March, DHL will build on 19 acres leased from the CVG Airport authority, to expand the existing parking apron for aircraft and build nine new gates. The project will allow for the parking of nine additional widebody aircraft, linking the U.S. with points in Asia, Europe and the Americas. All of the new gates will include a hydrant jet-refueling system, as well as the capability to de-ice aircraft directly at the gate. The work will continue through September, 2011. The expansion represents the second phase of a two-year, $40m investment by DHL at the Cincinnati hub. In October, 2010, the company announced a $12.5m project to upgrade hardware and software applications running its auto sort system. The CVG hub handles about 90 percent of DHL volumes entering the U.S., the company said.
