Truckload carriers continue to innovate to remain profitable, particularly through service diversification and driver retention, according to TMW Systems' first Transportation & Logistics Study - North America For-Hire Truckload Carrier Benchmarking Survey. Truckload carriers that are diversifying their businesses are adding new higher margin services, including brokerage, logistics, LTL-to-TL consolidation, dedicated services and intermodal services. Those looking to expand are exploring dedicated services first (27 percent), followed by brokerage services (21 percent). The majority of them are working on an accelerated schedule, within a one-year time frame.

Truckload linehaul rates fell 1.3 percent from February to March, compared to an average month-to-month decrease of about 0.6 percent. Year-over-year, rates are up 3.9 percent.
While it can't be said that every company has tapped into web-based transportation management systems, such applications have been around long enough to no longer qualify as new - and their presence in the enterprise is growing. Is it fair to say that traditional TMS software has been overtaken by web TMS? Perhaps not, but such online, hosted or on-demand systems are proliferating. They are quick to deploy in most cases, they are highly scalable and the faster-time-to-ROI argument hasn't hurt web-based TMS adoption either.
FTR Associates' Shippers Conditions Index (SCI) for January slipped an additional two points, falling to a reading of negative 7.1, reflecting deteriorating conditions for shippers in the early months of 2013. The SCI is forecast to continue to move downward as the year progresses and is expected to reach negative double-digit levels by year-end, indicating very difficult conditions for shippers.
