ODIN Labs, the testing arm of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology vendor ODIN, has released the latest in its series of head-to-head RFID equipment comparisons. Its High Memory RFID Tag Benchmark is based on the AS5678 tag standard. It compares six of the leading high-memory tags in five tests: minimum effective power, orientation sensitivity, read distance testing, handheld read distance and maximum encoding distance. The six tags come from five manufacturers: MAINTag, Marubeni, RCD Tag Source, RFID Tag Source and Xerafy. They contain new silicon chips from Fujitsu and Tego. The international AS5678 standard requires that individual words of data be separately locked and write-protected on the tag itself, rather than on a separate database. The feature allows for a flexible and secure history and maintenance data storage throughout the normal life of the device, according to ODIN Labs. High-memory tags can be used in the field, where access to a secure database might not always be possible or practical. The new benchmark represents the first time that ODIN has collaborated with a partner - French RFID integration company Frequentiel - to address tag issues in the European market.
