Lufthansa Cargo AG has begun operation of a pharmaceuticals hub at Hyderabad Airport in India for temperature-sensitive air freight. The location is the first within the carrier's global network to be certified as meeting requirements for the transportation of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. Along with the certification process, Lufthansa is expanding its fleet of cold-chain containers at Hyderabad. Last December, Lufthansa Cargo and the GMR Group, operator of Hyderabad Airport, announced plans jointly to develop the airport into a South Asian hub for moving temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. The first two cold-chain shipments from the new pharma hub were transported to Philadelphia and Chicago via Frankfurt, aboard a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 aircraft.
