Lufthansa Cargo AG has inaugurated its first-ever flights between Frankfurt, Germany and Detroit, Mich. The new route links Germany with the heart of the U.S. automobile industry every Monday (every Sunday after the beginning of the summer schedule). Beginning in March, the Detroit flights will be boosted to twice per week. Return flights will stop off in New York on their way back to Frankfurt. The carrier is deploying an MD-11 freighter in the service. According to Lufthansa Cargo, the new freight connection supplements daily flights operated by Lufthansa passenger aircraft. The addition is intended to meet growing demand from the automotive and pharmaceutical industries, among other sectors. Detroit represents the seventh U.S. destination served by the airline's freighter network in the U.S. Along with services operated by the Lufthansa passenger business, the carrier is now offering direct flights to 17 U.S. airports.
