DB Schenker has begun a regular rail service between Portugal and Germany. Offered by DB Schenker Rail Automotive GmbH and the company's Portuguese national company, Schenker Transitarios S.A., the service links the Portuguese cities of Porto and Lisbon with factories in northern Germany. Among its targets, according to the company, is the automotive industry in both countries. Operating weekly, the new route is intended to reinforce DB Schenker's Automotive RailNet service. In a related announcement, DB Schenker is providing new intermodal transport capacity between Belgium and Italy. Semi-trailers can travel along the Antwerp-Novara route. A new group of up to four well cars will be coupled or decoupled in Domodossola, Italy, on the Swiss border. The main leg between Basel and Aachen is under the responsibility of the intermodal market unit of DB Schenker Rail.
