Pacer Distribution Services, the warehousing and distribution arm of Pacer International, Inc., has opened a new container transload center in Carson, Calif. The 52-door facility was created to support increased demand for transloading services for international shipments moving from the U.S. West Coast to inland points, Pacer said. Covering 5.4 acres, the center is adjacent to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. While primarily intended as a transload operation, it will also provide extra capacity for the company's existing warehouse operations, which already occupy more than 800,000 square feet. At the facility, Pacer will transfer international freight from ocean containers into cost-efficient 53-foot domestic containers. Carriers have recently been stepping up the use of the practice as a means of turning around import containers faster, and reducing the need to retrieve equipment from deep in the interior. David Hoppens, vice president of marketing for Pacer International, said the company plans to roll out a fully integrated international transload service, complete with domestic door-to-door delivery, in the near future.
