Some of the real deals in the home delivery market "”Corey, RDI Logistics and OnTrac, have been in the business a long time. These are multi-generational family businesses that have grown their companies due to progressively embracing methods and technologies to stay ahead of their customers' expanding needs and the needs of their customers' customers.
Richard Deslongchamps Jr., president and CEO of RDI Logistics, says: "We really shouldn't even be considered a delivery business. We spend 20 percent of our time on the road, and 60 percent of our time in the customer's home. We are really a service business."
But back to Amazon. Of course, those are not Amazon's trucks and logistics companies. OnTrac is one of the companies that makes Amazon's same- and next-day delivery happen. As a regional player, they offer a variety of time-sensitive delivery services. OnTrac's growth is not due just to their commitment to flexibility and service. Also crucial is their ability to leverage advanced technologies for route planning, optimization, and mobile transportation technologies, to name a few.
Regional firms like OnTrac and others provide a variety of services like warehouse and inventory management for the retailers/etailers and manufacturers who have developed nationwide distribution networks, or partner with regional distributors/fulfillment centers. B2B or B2C and a variety of delivery options from parcel to full truckload are offered by OnTrac. It's tough to manage all those methods. But a progressive technology approach is the key to their success with such diversity.
