Subscriber management platforms provide a portal that a company can use to manage all of its connectivity requirements, whether cell, satellite or low-power radio, says Chadwick. The technology has been evolving since 2005, and gaining popularity with businesses looking to enhance their wireless connectivity.
The machine-to-machine (M2M) market only began to take off around 2004-2005, Chadwick says. Since that time, however, there hasn’t emerged a large number of technology competitors in the space. Dominance has gone to those who were first to market.
There are multiple benefits to be derived from the use of a subscriber management platform, says Chadwick. It reduces the complexity and cost of managing telecommunications connections. It allows companies to focus on their core business. It’s easy to manage. And it requires minimal resources. Many of Stream Technologies’ clients have hundreds of thousands of connections, and will soon reach a million or more, he says. “They need an efficient management process.”
There is a wide diversity of devices available in the marketplace, making compatibility an issue. The vast majority of mobile network operators, which number in the thousands, have yet to move to a comprehensive management platform, according to Chadwick.
The future holds “great things” for evolution of the technology, he says. The market is beginning to see an acceleration in technology related to M2M applications and the Internet of Things. Chadwick envisions a time when companies are routinely utilizing a single exchange hub for plugging into any number of wireless technologies, involving a “completely agnostic” platform for managing the Internet of Things.
