The base rate index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, increased by 2.8 percent when compared to December 2014.
Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers decreased this month. Fuel was 17.22 percent of base rates in January versus 18.56 percent in December.
"Total freight costs continue to rise driven by truckload activity in January despite decreasing fuel costs," said Doug Payne, president and COO of Nulogx, a provider of transportation management solutions and the sponsor of the CGFI. "Once again, cross-border and domestic LTL total costs slid in January, but were outweighed by the cross-border and domestic TL increases. Of particular note, we have seen a steady increase in accessorial charges, as a percentage of total freight spend, since May 2014."
