Dubbed “Product Images Application Guideline for the Retail Grocery Industry,” the guideline was developed by the GS1 US Retail Grocery Initiative Product Information and Images Workgroup, composed of retailers, manufacturers, distributors and system providers. Through GS1, industry partners can jointly develop recommendations on applying existing GS1 standards to retail grocery digit product images for e-commerce, in-store promotions, advertising and supply-chain purposes. The guideline is organized into three sections: general guidelines, a style guide and instructions for publishing images in the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), the standardized resource of continuously updated product information. The style guide also outlines recommendations for images in multiple applications, including on-shelf display, e-commerce, catalogs, marketing, packaging, barcodes and nutritional panels. The guideline provides industry with definitions, business-process standards and real-world examples of proper and improper usage. In a related announcement, GS1 US has introduced an online tool to provide members with validated, GS1 standards-based product, location and company data, barcode-creation capabilities and the ability to share data for enhanced collaboration with trading partners. The new GS1 US Data Hub integrates three existing GS1 US online tools: GS1 US Data Hub Version 2.0, Data Driver and the GLN Registry.
