Labelmaster, the maker of products that help shippers comply with hazardous-materials regulations, has developed a line of labels for the transportation of lithium batteries, especially by air. Such batteries pose a serious fire hazard if they are damaged or short-circuit during transportation, Labelmaster noted. Since batteries are chemical devices, they must be shipped, used and disposed of safely, in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines and government regulations. Within the last year, the company said, there have been a handful of incidents of computer laptops bursting into flames because of their batteries. In response, government and industry have taken steps to tighten the rules on transporting batteries, particularly by air. New restrictions on the size and type permitted for passengers are being put into place, with certain units being restricted to cargo aircraft. Labelmaster's new packaging and labels are designed to ensure the safer shipping of lithium batteries.
