PowerID Ltd. has entered into a strategic partnership with STMicroelectronics to market battery-assisted, passive (BAP) technology for radio frequency identification (RFID). PowerID is a vendor of BAP technology; STMicroelectronics is a major supplier of RFID chips. The deal also calls for the two companies to explore ways to co-market EPCglobal Class 1, Generation 2 technology to customers who require high-performance RFID, but find passive RFID too limited in performance, and active RFID too expensive or bulky. The partners estimate that general availability of PowerID's label incorporating BAP technology and meeting EPCglobal Class 1, Gen 2 standards will occur in the second quarter of this year. The co-developed technologies will be based on the marriage of PowerID's thin, environmentally friendly battery and STMicroelectronics' integrated circuit family, designed to support BAP technology. The effort will result in affordable, high-performance RFID products in the ultra high frequency range, for tracking high-value assets in challenging environments, the companies said.
