The coronavirus pandemic has thrown global sourcing strategies into chaos. Will it result in a return of some manufacturing to the U.S.?
Numerous plants in China were forced to close temporarily in the early weeks of the coronavirus outbreak in that country. Only recently have some begun resuming operations, but production won’t be back at full strength for some time to come. Does that mean a return by some manufacturers to making product in the U.S., to be closer to markets? On this episode, Rosemary Coates, executive director of the Reshoring Institute and president of Blue Silk Consulting, returns to the podcast to discuss possible sourcing scenarios after the outbreak subsides. She weighs the pros and cons of reshoring to the U.S., including the question of labor and skills availability, and which types of goods are best (and least) suited for domestic production. And she offers a view on what the U.S. should be doing now, to make itself a more attractive place for manufacturers. Hosted by Bob Bowman, Editor-in-Chief of SupplyChainBrain.
