The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. has added to its family of outdoor access point (AP) products. The Haz-location (Haz-Loc) certified AP-5181 is designed to extend wireless networks into the harshest work environments. Petrochemical, oil and gas, aerospace, power generation and utilities, mining and manufacturing organizations can deploy the new APs in "dead zones," through the use of mesh technology. Extra cabling is not required, the company said. The addition of the AP-5181s in a customer's control network enables more sensors and metering devices to be supported, providing critical information such as temperature, humidity and pressure readouts of plant machinery. The new APs also extend the IT network outdoors in hard-to-wire environments. Tasks that were previously complete in the plant office, such as the filing of field inspections, issuance of repair work orders and checking of maintenance records and parts inventories, can now be done in the field. The AP-5181 provides a high degree of security, with support for Wi-Fi protected access (WPA) and WPA2.
