Tesla has filed an application to double the production capacity of its German car plant located southeast of Berlin to 1 million electric vehicles annually. The car manufacturer also wants the plant to be able to produce more battery cells.

If the German government approves the application, Tesla’s gigafactory will be able to increase its battery storage capacity to 100 gigawatt hours per year from 50 gigawatt hours currently.

The facility’s expansion would also make it the biggest car factory in Europe, overtaking Volkswagen’s plant in Wolfsburg, Germany, according to CNN.

Tesla held a Q&A session July 18 with German citizens to outline its plans to local residents. Though the biggest concern highlighted during the meeting was how the plant would be expanded without using extra water, Tesla said that it is committed to not utilizing any additional water and will instead recycle 1.4 million cubic meters of water the company is licensed to use, according to Reuters.

The factory modifications outlined in the proposal, which are the first of three stages of change planned for the facility, are expected to be operational during the first half of 2024.

Any local residents that want to oppose Tesla’s expansion plans have until September 18, 2023 to file a complaint.
