Ford says it will be delaying its new all-electric SUV and pickup truck, as part of a move to focus more on hybrid vehicles in the years to come.
In an announcement on April 4, the company shared that it will be "retiming" its planned EV launches at its Ontario, Canada assembly plant, while pivoting toward plans to offer hybrid powertrains for its entire Ford Blue lineup in North America.
“As the No. 2 EV brand in the U.S. for the past two years, we are committed to scaling a profitable EV business, using capital wisely and bringing to market the right gas, hybrid and fully electric vehicles at the right time,” Ford president and CEO Jim Farley said.
Ford now says it will launch its three-row EVs from its Ontario plant in 2027. They also reported that equipment installation is underway at their Tennessee plant to allow for deliveries of their electric truck in 2026.
The Ontario plant was previously used for gas vehicles, before the company committed to transitioning it to an EV manufacturing complex. Work to start that transition will kick off in the second quarter of 2024.
EV sales have slowed nationwide in recent months, over concerns from consumers related to affordability, vehicle range, and charging station infrastructure.
