This stems from an executive order issued by President Biden in October, which set new standards for AI and tasked agencies with enacting a suite of guardrails for the technology over a 180-day period. That included practices for employers getting federal funds on how to deploy AI "in ways that empower workers," as well as resources for federal contractors to mitigate against potentially harmful impacts of using AI in hiring decisions.
The order also had the Department of Energy put together a report on how AI can be used to reach various climate goals. The report details how the technology can be used to speed up permitting for clean energy infrastructure, optimize planning for electric vehicle charging networks, and strengthen the resilience of the nation's power grid.
