PepsiCo says it will soon expand its electric vehicle trucking fleet in California, as it targets net zero emissions by 2040.
Within the "next several months," the beverage company plans to use 50 Class 8 Tesla semi trucks at its manufacturing and distribution facility in Fresno, California. PepsiCo has already installed eight 750 kilowatt Tesla chargers and a pair of Tesla battery storage systems on-site at the facility in preparation. The company will also deploy another 75 Ford E-Transit electric vans across 13 of its locations in California, which will be used for service support and sale deliveries.
"Our fleet electrification is an important part of our strategy and illustrates how sustainability is a core business strategy at PepsiCo— good for the planet, good for our business, and good for the communities we serve," PepsiCo North America president John Dean said.
Other companies have made similar investments in recent months. That includes Amazon, which announced plans in May to use 50 all-electric trucks to haul freight in Southern California. Eight of those trucks will operate out of the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The Port of Oakland also announced its own project to have 30 hydrogen-powered trucks move freight across Northern California.
