Electric vehicle maker Nikola sold 72 Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell trucks in the second quarter of 2024, beating its initial estimate of 60.
The company says it sold 112 hydrogen trucks — assembled in Coolidge, Arizona with a range of 500 miles — in the first half of 2024, including the sale of a new fleet to Walmart Canada on June 27.
“We are firmly on the field and are continuing to secure our first-mover advantage in zero-emissions Class 8 trucks in North America," Nikola CEO Steve Girsky said.
Zero emission truck fleets have grown across North America in 2024. In May, PepsiCo expanded its EV fleet to include 50 Class 8 Tesla semi trucks at its manufacturing and distribution facility in Fresno, California. That same month, Amazon announced plans to use 50 EV trucks to move freight in Southern California, eight of which will operate out of the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Port of Oakland also launched a $53 million project to use hydrogen fuel cell trucks to haul freight in Northern California, while the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach invested $25 million in new charging infrastructure for electric drayage trucks.
