The Enterprise Mobility business of Motorola, Inc. has created the VC6096, a new in-vehicle, fixed-mount mobile computer. The rugged unit was built to withstand the rigors of everyday use on the road. The new model adds wireless voice and data capabilities. It collects a wide variety of data, including mileage, location, driver performance and vehicle metrics such as hours of service, and arrival and departure times. With integrated GPS communications technology, the VC6096 can support real-time, location-based applications, including directions for drivers and fleet-location information for dispatchers. Mobile workers can access simultaneous voice and data connections via 3.5G WAN connectivity on the GSM network. The new unit also improves the safety and lifecycle of vehicle fleets with integrated SAE J1708 and SAE J1939 telemetrics support, Motorola said. Transportation users can automatically monitor and collect engine operation information, providing dispatchers with visibility into engine error codes. The device also provides information on the driving patterns of mobile workers, to identify safety issues, eliminate unnecessary wear and tear on vehicles, and minimize fuel consumption.
