Horizon Lines, Inc. is now providing ReeferPlusGPS tracking and shipment monitoring for refrigerated ocean containers moving between the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico. According to Horizon, the system is meant to improve the visibility and security of high-value perishable cargo requiring cold-chain logistics. The technology features in-box sensors which report temperature, atmosphere and security updates via the Web on a real-time basis. It allows for remote monitoring and adjustment of reefer conditions with one computer click. ReeferPlusGPS uses Impeva Labs' Global Sentinel Unit, which links multiple two-way communication channels, real-time wireless sensors and a direct, two-way interface to the refrigerated container's controller. Users can track, trace, monitor and take corrective action from offices anywhere in the world, the line said. The technology has been under development in the Puerto Rican trade lane for two years, according to Jacob Wegrzyn, senior vice president and general manager of Horizon Lines' Puerto Rico Division. The line owns or leases 21 U.S.-flag containerships and five port terminals linking the continental U.S. with Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Micronesia and Puerto Rico.
