PeopleNet, a provider of onboard computing and mobile communications systems for North American truckers, has developed a tethered trailer-tracking system. The technology is intended to reduce detention time and eliminate delivery errors. The system allows the user's back office to monitor tractor-trailer hookups, drops and locations of hooks and drops in real time. The result, said PeopleNet, is better trailer utilization, decreased operating costs and assurance that the right tractors are hauling the right trailers. The technology brings the industry closer to wireless fleet management, PeopleNet said. Its WiVAN Gateway enables communications with the trailer, trailer components and tractor components. The Trailer Tracking Module communicates specific details about the trailer. The total information loop occurs within seconds, with the Trailer ID software-sending trailer and location data to the WiVAN Gateway (mounted inside the trailer), which relays the information to the g3, PeopleNet's onboard computer. The g3 sends the information to the PeopleNet Network Operating Center, where it is stored. Customers can access a series of reports, including Hooked Tractor, Trailer Locations, Alerts and Trailer History. Fleets can also retrieve data for integration into their back-office systems.
