Savi Networks has certified for wide use a new wireless cargo-tracking device tied to SaviTrak, the vendor's supply-chain execution intelligence service built on an open-technology platform. SaviTrak can now provide real-time intelligence on the global location, security and condition of container shipments, by way of a tag device, which includes global positioning system (GPS) capability, cellular and active radio frequency identification (RFID) with sensor technologies. The new product is the tenth electronic cargo-monitoring device from a variety of third-party manufacturers to be certified by Savi Networks, to integrate into the global SaviTrak intelligence service. The multi-wireless device, which clamps onto a container door, receives GPS location data at configurable time intervals. Sensors embedded in the tag detect and record security breaches of the container doors, as well as any changes in temperature, light and humidity within the container. The unit then communicates the information to either active RFID or GSM cellular networks using GPRS. According to Savi, the device was tested for nearly a year in real-world operational environments involving global customs authorities; international shippers, terminal operators and third-party logistics service providers.
