ALK Technologies has approved the North American version of its CoPilot Live GPS navigation system for sale on the iPhone App Store. The tool is available immediately for iPhone 3G and 3Gs for a one-time fee of $34.99. Detailed street maps of the U.S. and Canada are stored on the phone instead of being downloaded for each trip, eliminating the need for extra hardware and monthly fees. Running in portrait or landscape display mode, CoPilot Live provides turn-by-turn navigation instructions, along with automatic route calculation, 3-D map displays and voice directions. CoPilot can provide continuous guidance when the user loses a GPS signal in a tunnel. Other services include a five-day weather forecast and location-sharing feature known as CoPilot LiveLink, through which users can check the location of friends on-screen or online. ALK had earlier announced the availability of CoPilot Live v8 for smartphones. The software is available for Windows Mobile or Android-based phones. A new service. CoPilot OnDemand, enables customers to buy extra maps online and download them directly to their phones via a Wi-Fi connection.
