DB Schenker Romtrans, the Romanian unit of the subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, has established a less-than-truckload network in that country. The operation is based on European industrial standards, with shipments now being handled through a newly established central hub in Brasov. The project was inaugurated with the participation of the bauMax Group, an Austrian chain of do-it-yourself (DIY) hardware stores. The company signed a multi-year contract with DB Schenker Romtrans for the distribution of products from Romanian suppliers to local bauMax outlets. BauMax currently operates seven DIY centers in Romania and plans to expand to nine. DB Schenker Romtrans has 10 branch offices and 70 depots. Locations in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoa, Arad and Iasi are linked to the LTL system, working in cooperation with the hub in Brasov. Shipments tendered by 3:00 p.m. can be delivered to most of Romania's major economic centers the following day; those headed for remoter areas are delivered on the third day. The new system allows DB Schenker to transport partial loads throughout Romania faster and more cost effectively than before, the company said.
