Canada will next open a 30-day public consultation period on July 2 to weigh responses to any potential tariffs against China moving forward.

The European Commission, the executive body of the EU, had announced plans for tariffs of up to 38% on electric cars from China, on top of an existing 10% on all imported cars.

The news comes as Italy and the European Union as a whole are cracking down on cars produced outside the trading bloc.

China is likely to respond to President Biden’s increases in tariffs on Chinese imports, including electric vehicles, in several ways. 

Europe exported more than €2.5 billion ($2.7 billion) worth of pork into China in 2023, according to EU customs data.

As they weather the fallout from multiple sources of disruption to global commerce, importers and exporters are seeking ways to make their supply chains more resilient.

Norway has the highest density of electric vehicles in the world, with more than 12% of EVs imported into the country coming from Chinese brands. 

European manufacturers are also bracing themselves for retaliatory measures from China, in the form of a range of duties on its exports, including vehicles, but also other products.

China has accused the EU of working to “suppress” Chinese companies and said it will take action to safeguard its interests.
