Cognex Corp. has introduced a new DataMan 300 barcode reader, designed for high-speed logistics applications such as tote scanning, print-and-apply verification, and carton code reading. The new device complements the previously released DataMan 500 reader, which reads 1D or 2D codes in any direction at high speeds for postal, parcel and package sortation, as well as presentation scanning. The new DataMan 300 performs fixed 1D code reading for high-speed tote scanning and print-and-apply lines. The technology combines the Cognex algorithm, 1DMax, with Hotbars technology, which uses texture to locate barcodes at any orientation, then extracts high-resolution 1D signals for decoding. According to Cognex, camera-based barcode readers allow for higher read rates, lower equipment costs and "future-proofing," as 2D matrix codes become more prevalent in distribution operations.
