Ortec has developed a new solution in partnership with Xata that allows exception-based fleet management and adherence to Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) requirements, Miller says. Xata provides the black boxes in trucks that record driver performance and Ortec makes that information available to fleet owners. "It is very important for fleet managers to know when a driver is stopped, when he is moving, what he is doing when stopped, how often he is taking his sleep and how long he is awake," Miller says. These are factors that drive performance in terms of on-time delivery and identifies area that need attention, such as long dwell times, he says.
"All of that information is fed into our solution, which provides a logistics hub that gives visibility to this information as well to as the driver's route, so users can see what is going on in real time and whether the shipment is on schedule," says Miller.
This same solution uses the information to create reports needed to show compliance with hours of service rules. "Users can actually see whether the driver is getting his required sleep, whether the required safety equipment is on board and whether the trailer being pulled meets safety criteria," he says. "Today commercial vehicles are being inspected more frequently and more closely than ever, so being able to document compliance is important."
