Cognex Corp. has issued version 5.2 of its hardware-independent, machine-vision software known as VisionPro. The update provides an easier-to-use version of Cognex's PatMax technology, enhanced color tools and an enhanced architecture to capitalize on multicore PCs. The release includes new SearchMax and Color Extractor color tools. SearchMax uses color features to search for objects. According to Cognex, it is especially useful in applications where geometrical data is insufficient to align the part. Color Extractor locates colored regions in complex scenes, with minimal training on the part of users. It is optimized for high-speed applications such as those required in the food and packaging industries, Cognex said. The new release also includes multicore support for image-filtering tools as well as for PatMax and PatInspect. Customers can manually adjust the way cores are used, or rely on the operating system to get the best application speed, regardless of the number of cores available. In a related development, Cognex has added the Checker 3G series to its line of vision-sensor products. With Checker 3G, the user chooses whether to configure the unit as a presence or measurement sensor. Presence sensors verify that features are present. Measurement sensors verify that they are the correct height, width and diameter. The new sensor does not require a PC for setup. Instead, the SensorView Teach Pendant, with One-Click Setup technology, allows the user to set up jobs on the line and have them running in a matter of minutes, according to Cognex. The Checker 3G incorporates integrated part detection, lighting, I/O and job change features in a rugged IP67 housing.
