Axxom Software AG has developed a new tool for enacting supply-chain optimization. The application lets users consider complexity costs and economies of scale, when analyzing their logistics and production networks. Previously, said Axxom, companies could save on cost by processing the largest amount of goods possible at one location. The strategy would often lead, however, to longer transport distances and higher distribution costs. Axxom's new ORion-PI Network Scale Savings system helps users to strike an optimum balance, by considering issues related to economy of scale as well as complexity costs. Axxom's ORion-PI product family allows for integrated planning and optimization of processes throughout the logistics chain. In the warehouse, for example, the system allows for analysis and optimization of task assignments, pick strategies and various types of material-handling technologies. The Logistics Optimization module of ORion-PI creates a geometrical model of the warehouse layout, so that users can plan staff levels and deployment strategies for different areas of the facility.
